Cisco, Itron partner on LADWP smart grid demo
Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the nation's largest municipal utility, will partner with Itron and Cisco technologies on its smart grid demonstration project.
Financed, in part, by U.S. Department of Energy ARRA grants, the smart grid demo will allow for the evaluation and development of increased energy efficiency and grid reliability, improved water resource management, detection and restoration of power outages more quickly, and shifting of peak power loads, in addition to creating a foundation for the integration of electric vehicles.
LADWP will install up to 52,000 Itron smart electric meters and 20 smart water meters that will operate over an integrated cellular and multi-application IPv6 communication network based on the Cisco GridBlocks architecture, allowing LADWP to deploy a secure, scalable communications infrastructure which is scheduled to be complete by fall 2013.
