E2America's smart grid technology reduces consumption, demand

Tools

Efficient Energy America, Inc. (E2America) is using its Digi International's iDigi Device Cloud, ConnectPort X4 gateways and XBee ZB ZigBee modules to wirelessly enable the E2 intelligent commercial building control system. E2America's smart grid efficiency technology currently reduces energy consumption and demand by optimizing HVAC efficiency for an average annual savings of $7,000 to $8,000 per site.

Utilities can incentivize customers to install E2America's technology and in return customers assign Renewable Energy Credits (REC) back to the utility. "These credits are a tradeable commodity. For every 10,000 kWh saved through E2 technology, the utility company receives one REC," E2America's Dara O'Neill told FierceSmartGrid. "A utility company, therefore, pays a one-time incentive for the energy-efficient technology and obtains RECs in perpetuity. When a $5,000 incentive can translate into eight RECs per year, it is a good investment for the utility."
